Add page numbers to a PDF in your browser. Choose where they go, how they read, and which number to start from, then download the numbered copy.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Click "Choose file" and select your PDF.
- Pick a position, a format such as "Page 3 of 12", and a text size.
- Set the first number and choose all pages or only some, then click "Add page numbers".
- Click "Download" to save the numbered PDF.
Skipping a cover and starting at a different number
To leave a cover page or title section unnumbered, choose only the pages you want and type a range such as 3-40. Then set the first number to whatever the first numbered page should show. If chapter two of a book starts on page 5, set the start to 5.
The total in formats like "3 / 12" and "Page 3 of 12" counts only the pages you number, so a 40-page file with a two-page cover reads "of 38".
Positions and formats
There are six positions: top or bottom, each at the left, centre or right. Bottom centre is the classic choice for reports; top right suits legal and academic papers. Formats are "3", "Page 3", "3 / 12" and "Page 3 of 12", in small, medium or large text.
Frequently asked questions
What happens with rotated or landscape pages?
The numbers stay upright and land in the corner you chose, as you see the page on screen, even if the page was rotated or is landscape.
Can I number only some pages?
Yes. Choose specific pages and type the numbers or ranges. Pages you leave out stay exactly as they were.
Can page numbers use other alphabets or Roman numerals?
Not yet. For now the number text supports Latin characters only, so labels like "Page" work but other scripts don't.
What is the new file called?
It keeps your original name with "-numbered" added, for example thesis-numbered.pdf. Your original file isn't changed.
Can I add page numbers on my phone?
Yes, in iPhone and Android browsers. Very large PDFs, roughly over 200 MB, may be slow on phones because of memory limits.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Not yet. A PDF that asks for a password when opened can't be processed for now; unlocking is planned.
Is it free, and does it add a watermark?
It is free with no signup and no daily limits, and no watermark is added to your PDF. It also works offline after your first visit.
